Why do the Australian tax payers have to pay for Tiger Woods and Oprah?

by admin on December 16, 2010

This is selfish to the extreme. Both of them are wealthy, and good and decent Aussie have to pay for them? Tiger Woods received a 3 million dollar fee just for being here, and we had to pay. This is a man who cheated on his wife with upwards of 17 women. How is this fair? Why should we have to be FORCED into paying for them? Why can’t they pay their own way?

Theres a saying that in order to make money you have to spend money….this is all about using their profiles to generate revenue in the form of tourism….focusing the eyes of the world on our country & encouraging people to come & spend their money with us.

It’s a business proposition & in the case of Oprah , should reap a handsome dividend !

We’re not really being "FORCED" as you put it, regardless of where the money goes you’ll always pay the same amount of tax. Just depends on how the government decides to distribute it, which in my opinion the last few years has been STUPIDLY.

I agree on you on tiger woods but both celebs bring attention to the country and publicity of tourism and vocation. I mean come on Oprah was accompanied by 300 other women to experience Australia. I won’t to go to Australia also. And Australia is one of the wealthy countries around the world. And it also brings rating to the idea of travelin there.

I wasn’t aware the tax payer was paying for either of them Oprah payed her own way & the AGU pays Tiger.Mind you,I wouldn’t give him a cent if it was up to me nor any other wealthy sportsman.Oprah’s visit will do great things for our tourist industry IMO.

During a show about mad cow disease with Howard Lyman (aired on April 16, 1996), Winfrey exclaimed, "It has just stopped me cold from eating another burger!" Texas cattlemen sued her and Lyman in early 1998 for "false defamation of perishable food" and "business disparagement", claiming that Winfrey’s remarks sent cattle prices tumbling, costing beef producers $12 million. On February 26, after a two month trial in an Amarillo, Texas court, a jury found Winfrey and Lyman were not liable for damages.

The above is one of MANY examples of the power of Oprah. She says "It has just stopped me cold from eating another burger!" and sales plummet to the point where the meat industry feel the need to sue her.

The moment a book is promoted in her Oprah Book Club the sales of that book skyrocket.

Now imagine she said to her audience…" Australia is (insert wonderful comments here)"… and think what that could do to tourism numbers for this country. Remember Tourism Australia want her in Australia not because they like her and watch her show and think she’s swell… they want her here because of what she could do for tourism in our country. Or would you rather continue to have Laura Bingle in a bikini fronting our next series of campaigns?
