There needs to be a salary cap that is for sure so every team can have a fiar advantage to get the good players. However the amount of money you spend does not necessarily mean you will be good or bad. For example the last few years (not including this one) yankees were at the top. and they did not make the post season. And the Marlins had the lowest payroll and were always in contention and several times in the past few years made the post season.

Look at it this way, tomboy. All major league teams are owned by billionaires, big, small market, it doesn’t matter. If these owners want to do the right thing and try to put together a competive team, they can. If you want a communist system in baseball, go find another sport!

ANTHONY February 10, 2010 at 10:38 am

yeah the twins are really good and there in it to the end
WOW SHOCKER LOOK HOW MUCH THE YANKEES SPENT!!!
im a twins fan so
basicly the 21,836,500 the marlins spent
3/4 of it was to hanley ramirez

darth v February 10, 2010 at 10:38 am

Rich teams like the yankees pay a TAX to the major league, that’s why it’s fair.

frank February 10, 2010 at 10:38 am

I don’t really see your point. You’ve done nothing but list the payroll for all the teams. What exactly is your question, and why does this make baseball a "joke"?

Tony Montana February 10, 2010 at 10:38 am

@ Darth V, why would the luxury tax make it fair? The luxury tax is like 50,000 for every 1,000,000 you go over the threshold…that’s chump change.

The Yankees win, not only because of the players on the field, but because of their whole organization, top to bottom. The ownership invests in the team to put the best players on the field, working at every level from trades to free-agents, to a fantastic farm system (where they get most of their starting players. don’t believe me? Look at their roster.)

If you don’t like it, complain to your team’s ownership about why they don’t do what they need to win. The Yankees don’t even make a profit unless they make it to the post-season. That’s their business model. If your team shared that view, you’d compete better.

But money isn’t everything. The Mets are #2 and they suck.

The rules are set, so it’s perfectly fair, but nobody ever said it had to be even. It’s sports, not politics. If one set of millionaires loses and another wins, I really don’t feel too badly. I enjoy watching my team dominate and if your team loses, well it’s a game and like most sports, it’s a zero sum game. Sorry.

You want to change the rules, I’m OK with that, and I’m confident the Yankees front office can field the best team no matter what.

Thank Bud Selig.

steelers17237 February 10, 2010 at 10:38 am

Its not about how much there paid its how good they are if you look at the power ranking it is way different than this the 29 team rays are alot higher than that and the 2 mets are alot lower

Yo Dookie! February 10, 2010 at 10:38 am

Well, if it matters, only twice in the past 30 years has a team won the World Series with a $100 million plus payroll: the 2007 Red Sox and 2001 Yankees.

The Twins and Rockies made it made it, the Rangers were there for a while, the Phils are under 100 mil.

red sox February 10, 2010 at 10:38 am

how does that make mlb a joke?

Bert Weidemeier February 10, 2010 at 10:38 am

It’s ironic that George Steinbrenner was the one who said baseball needed a cap.

What he meant was that to make it fair, they had to have a cap on both ends….MAXIMUM allowable team payroll, and MINIMUM allowable team payroll; and the man was right!

*Go_Twins<3* February 10, 2010 at 10:38 am

Wow! only two teams from 20-30 made it in the playoffs

Ha Ha HA! detroit tigers are number 3, the twins are 24th, and they still couldnt get by the twins into the playoffs
