How Many Original MLB Teams are Still in Their Original Cities?

by admin on March 8, 2010

Okay I have a little bet with my brother. How many original Major League Baseball teams are still their original cities? By this I mean teams that were in the AL and NL the years the leagues were founded?

Here is what I have:

AL: Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, NY Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians.
NL: Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals.

I thought the Pittsburgh Pirates might be in there, they have been together many years. But no. They were started playing several years after the NL was founded.

The following teams are expansion teams:

NL:

Mets
Astros (Colt 45;s)
Padres
Nationals (Expos)
DiamondBacks
Marlins
Rockies
Brewers

AL:

Angels
Rangers (Senators)
Royals
Blue Jays
Mariners
Rays

The following teams moved twice:

Braves from Boston to Milwaukee to Atlanta
A’s from Philadelphia to KC to Oakland

The following teams moved once: (original teams)

Dodgers from Brooklyn to LA
Giants from NY to San Francisco
St Louis Browns to Baltimore and became the Orioles

All the other teams are in their original cities.

The funniest thing is one guy here said Angels.

It cracks me up how 95% of the people who post here don’t know that baseball existed before 1995.

The Chicago Cubs are the ONLY National League franchise in the same city since 1876.

In the American League, the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago White Sox, the Cleveland Indians, and the Detroit Tigers, are the only original teams still in the same city since 1901.

AL: Yankees, started as the Baltimore Orioles, moved to New York in 1903.
NL: Phillies, did not start until 1883. Reds, started in 1882. Cardinals, also in 1882.

Before you make a bet, do some research.

The Yankees started out as the Baltimore Orioles.

edit: The AL started in 1901. The Angels started in 1961.

edit2: Just checked the Phillies. They didn’t join the NL until 1883, seven years after the league started in 1876.
