Not much time…looking for good things to do in downtown chicago and detroit.?

by admin on February 8, 2010

Soon I will be taking a 3 day weekend trip to catch a tiger’s game, then travel to chicago to hit a white sox game the next day and a cubbies game the day after that. three games in three days and then back home to work. We’ll have a few hours in each city to kill and I am looking for some suggestions on what to see do while I’m there. I have never been before, but will likely get back some other time.

I’m looking for anything…best local restaurants, good clubs/bars with live music, museums, general sights… any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The MGM Grand casino is near Tiger stadium if you like gambling. I don’t gamble, but always hit the MGM when in
Detroit for their fabulous buffet.

There are just too many things to list in Chicago that are fun and interesting. Down in the "Loop", their downtown area, if you like pizza, you have to try Chicago Deep Dish Pizza at a place called Gino’s East. Or, since you’re into baseball go to Harry Caray’s Restaurant. Even though this legendary announcer has passed on, the restaurant lives! Second City is a great place for comedy – many well known comedians started out there. The Magnificent Mile is great for shopping. Water Tower Place is a mall in a skyscraper. The old Water Tower is a great historical spot to visit. You can go up in the Sears Tower or Hancock Building to get fantastic views of the surrounding area. Walk down Michigan avenue and you’ll find things to do and things to see. It’s actually part of Chicago’s building code that developers have to include art and sculpture into their designs. Navy Pier is great at night. The Museum of Science and Industry is fantastic. So is the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium.

You’re sure to have fun on this trip!

It’s good that you’re going to Detroit first and then Sox and then Cubs because your trip will peak at the end. The stuff to do in Detroit is pretty much walking distance from Comerica. You can do the casinos if that’s your thing or you can walk to Greektown and get some good eats.

It’s about six hours door to door from Detroit to Chicago and less if you’re avoiding rush hour. If you’re doing both Sox and Cubs then all you need to know is the CTA Red Line http://tinyurl.com/6ahb6m . The train stops at both Comiskey and Wrigley and you are a fool to drive to either place. For the Sox game you can hang downtown, take the train to the game and take the train back out. For the Cubs game you can take the train to Wrigley, party and eat before the game, go to the game and party and eat AFTER the game. Email me xphiljunkx at yahoo if you want suggestions on non-touristy places to eat. Have FUN.
